The purple heart

If you took a breath today, this is for you.

The wrapping was a silver bag

With gold foil running through

If this had just been the gift

Well, this alone would do

But underneath the tissue

Was a small envelope

And a card with silver foil

On the cover, it said “Hope”

A necklace fell out and into my hand

A jeweled heart with a silver chain

I care for you, the card read,

And I’m sorry for your pain

You deserve a medal

For making it this far

And you need recognition

For your service in this war

For the times that you went hungry

So that others could eat

The things you had barter

To keep from living in the street

The sleepless nights, the silent cries

The times you didn’t quit

The times you saw no other way

But didn’t give into it

For many years of service

Without recompense or pay

For blazing trails through warzones

When there was no other way

Always lighting flames for others

When your own light had gone dark

From one warrior to another

I give you this purple heart

Please wear it proudly

And know that we love you

And hold it close when times are dark

And it will see you through

For many years of service

Without recompense or pay

For blazing trails through warzones

When there was no other way

Always lighting flames for others

When your own light had gone dark

From one warrior to another

I give you this purple heart
